“We’re gonna raise the level of public debate in this country, and let that be our legacy.” —

- Leo McGarry, “Let Bartlet Be Bartlet” (The West Wing, season 1, episode 19)

If this was the philosophy of all politicians, this world might actually, finally, be a good place. ♥

“She bought her first new car and you hit her with a drunk driver. What, was that supposed to be funny? “You can’t conceive, nor can I, the appalling strangeness of the mercy of God,” says Graham Greene. I don’t know who’s ass he was kissing there ‘cause I think you’re just vindictive. What was Josh Lyman? A warning shot? That was my son. What did I ever do to yours but praise his glory and praise his name? There’s a tropical storm that’s gaining speed and power. They say we haven’t had a storm this bad since you took out that tender ship of mine in the north Atlantic last year… 68 crew. You know what a tender ship does? Fixes the other ships. Doesn’t even carry guns. Just goes around, fixes the other ships and delivers that mail. That’s all it can do. Gratias tibi ago, domine. Yes, I lied. It was a sin. I’ve committed many sins. Have I displeased you, you feckless thug? 3.8 million new jobs, that wasn’t good? Bailed out Mexico, increased foreign trade, 30 million new acres of land for conservation, put Mendoza on the bench, we’re not fighting a war, I’ve raised three children… That’s not enough to buy me out of the doghouse? Haec credam a deo pio? A deo iusto? A deo scito? Cruciatus in crucem! Tuus in terra servus nuntius fui officium perfeci. Cruciatus in crucem. Eas in crucem!
You get Hoynes!”

“What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican Party? I’ll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did Conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things, every one. So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, ‘Liberal,’ as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won’t work, because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor.” —Matt Santos (via spinlighted)

  • LEO: Seventeen across. Yes. Seventeen across is wrong. You're spelling his name wrong. What's my name? My name doesn't matter. I'm just an ordinary citizen who relies on the Times crossword for stimulation. And I'm telling you, that I've met with the man twice, and I've recommended a preemptive Exocet Missile attack against his airforce. So, I think I know how to...
  • CJ: Leo!
  • LEO: They hang up on me. Every time.
  • CJ: That's almost hard to believe.

  • Margaret: Can - can I just say something, you know, for the future?
  • Leo: Yeah.
  • Margaret: I can sign the President's name. I have his signature down pretty good.
  • Leo: You can sign the President's name?
  • Margaret: Yeah.
  • Leo: On a document removing him from power and handing it to someone else?
  • Margaret: Yeah. Or, do you think the White House Counsel would say that was a bad idea?
  • Leo: I think the White House Counsel would say that's a coup d'etat.
  • Margaret: I'd probably end up doing some time for that.
  • Leo: I would think. And what the hell are you doing practicing the President's signature?
  • Margaret: It's just for fun.
  • Leo: We've got separation of powers, checks and balances, and Margaret, vetoing things and sending them back to the hill.

“This is our 5th press briefing since midnight. Obviously, there’s one story that’s going to dominate news around the world for the next few days, and it would be easy to think that President Bartlet, Joshua Lyman, and Stephanie Abbott were the only victims of a gun crime last night. They weren’t. Mark Davis and Sheila Evans of Philadelphia were killed by a gun last night. He was a Biology Teacher and she was a Nursing student. Tina Bishop and Linda Larkin were killed with a gun last night. They were 12. There were 36 homicides last night. 480 sexual assaults, 3,411 robberies, 3,685 aggravated assaults, all at gunpoint. And if anyone thinks those crimes could have been prevented if the victims themselves had been carrying guns, I’d only remind you that the President of the United States was shot last night while surrounded by the best trained armed guards in the history of the world. Back to the briefing.” —

If I wasn’t sold on Aaron Sorkin as the best writer ever this scene did it for me.

“Because I’m tired of working for candidates who make me feel embarrassed to believe what I believe. I’m TIRED of GETTING THEM ELECTED. You all need some therapy, because somebody came along and said that “liberal” means soft on crime, soft on drugs, soft on Communism, soft on defense, and “we’re gonna tax you back to the stone age because people shouldn’t go to work if they don’t want to” - and instead of saying, “EXCUSE ME, you right-wing, reactionary, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-education, anti-choice, Leave-It-to-Beaver Back to the 50s,” we… cowered in the corner… and said, “Please. Don’t hurt me.” NO MORE. Let’s have two parties. What do you say?” —

ADMIRAL FITZWALLACE: We’re discussing gays in the military, huh?

MAJOR THOMPSON: Yes sir.

ADMIRAL FITZWALLACE: What do you think? …I said, what do you think?

MAJOR THOMPSON: Sir, we’re here to help the White House form a possible-

ADMIRAL FITZWALLACE: I know. I’m asking you what you think.

MAJOR TATE: Sir, we’re not prejudiced toward homosexuals.

ADMIRAL FITZWALLACE: You just don’t want to see them serving in the Armed Forces?

MAJOR TATE: No sir, I don’t.

ADMIRAL FITZWALLACE: ‘Cause they pose a threat to unit discipline and cohesion.

MAJOR TATE: Yes sir.

ADMIRAL FITZWALLACE: That’s what I think too. I also think the military wasn’t designed to be an instrument of social change.

MAJOR TATE: Yes sir.

ADMIRAL FITZWALLACE: The problem with that is that what they were saying to me 50 years ago. Blacks shouldn’t serve with Whites. It would disrupt the unit. You know what? It did disrupt the unit. The unit got over it. The unit changed. I’m an admiral in the U.S. Navy and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Beat that with a stick.
